Legal vs. Informational Testing

Legal vs. Informational DNA Testing

Both types of testing use the same lab analysis and provide equally accurate results. The difference is in how samples are collected and whether results can be used in court.

Legal DNA Testing

Legal testing follows strict chain-of-custody procedures that make results admissible in court and acceptable to government agencies.

How it works:

Samples collected by a neutral third party at an approved facility. Photo ID verification and documentation for all participants. Witnessed collection with tamper-evident seals. Complete paper trail from collection through results.

When you need it:

Court cases (paternity, custody, child support). Immigration applications. Birth certificate changes. Estate or inheritance claims. Social Security benefits.

Key points:

Cannot collect samples at home. Appointment required at collection facility. Results include official legal documentation. Typically costs $100-$200 more than informational testing.

Informational DNA Testing

Informational testing provides accurate results for personal knowledge but cannot be used for legal purposes.

How it works:

Kit shipped to your home. You collect samples yourself using cheek swabs. Return samples in prepaid packaging. Results delivered securely online.

When it's appropriate:

Personal peace of mind. Private family matters. No legal proceedings involved. All parties agree on testing purpose.

Key points:

Convenient at-home collection. Complete privacy. Lower cost. Same lab accuracy as legal testing. Not admissible in court.

The Critical Difference

You cannot convert informational results to legal results. If you collect samples at home without chain-of-custody, you'll need to completely retest if legal results become necessary.

If there's any chance you'll need legal results in the future, start with legal testing. It provides flexibility without requiring costly retesting later.

Which test do you need?

Choose legal testing if you might ever need to submit results to a court, government agency, or legal representative.

Choose informational testing if you're certain results are only for personal knowledge and no legal matters are involved.
